24) April 2020 Part 2: Ornithology & Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

Hello MandoMike reader! I say this every month, but I mean it now more than ever - I hope you are well? These are strange times and I hope you are finding, like me, practice on the mandolin is helping to keep you relatively sane. Before we look at part 2 of the Free Lessons for this month, I'd just like to remind you all that I have dropped the prices on all lesson options over at Mando Mike.

Skype Lessons are now only £10 for 30 mins, 'DIY' Lessons are only £20 (you tell me what tune or technique you'd like to learn) and the price of all of my books has been dropped to just £4.99 for the download versions.

Like most/all musicians, I have lost all of my live work until at least the end of summer, so Mando Mike is my main focus now and any purchase you make is a huge help to keep this website going. If you'd just like to make a one off donation, that can be done via this link . Any donation, no matter how small, is hugely appreciated.

This is part 2 of April's Free Lessons. Both are picking up on the tunes we learned in part 1, so if you missed that, I suggest you loop back and look at part first. Here's what is included in part 2 of April's Free Lessons:

Beginner & Intermediate - Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

For the Beginner & Intermediate lesson, we're going to look at adding tremolo to the melody to Lonesome Moonlight Waltz and then look at some harder chords. For beginners, you should focus on the tremolo and more intermediate players should look at both tremolo and the harder chords. The lesson worksheet can be downloaded here, and the corresponding video is here.

Advanced - Ornithology

For the Advanced lesson, I want to focus on the chord progression to Charlie Parker's 'Ornithology'. It needs a lot more thought than your average G,C & D song and I will hopefully give you the tools you need to tackle this fast moving progression. The lesson worksheet can be downloaded here and the corresponding video is here.

These lessons are completely free and I intend to try to keep them that way... but this is quite a time consuming exercise … thank you to everyone who has supported me so far in the last 2 years of running Mando Mike and I look forward to bringing you much more mandolin content!

If you have any questions, or any problems with accessing the lessons or the videos, please just hit 'reply' on this email. For anyone new to the website, all previous Free Lessons are still available here :-)

See you next month! Hope you enjoy the lesson :) Mando Mike
