21) Jan 2020: Double stops in A & playing in 7/8

Happy New Year MandoMike follower! I hope this blog finds you well, I am excited to be bringing you the first Free Monthly Lesson of 2020. I am really pleased with how the lessons have come out this month and I think they all have something in them to challenge any mandolin player! Here's a bit more info on what I have in store for you all for this month:

Beginner & Intermediate - Double Stops in A

For the Beginner & Intermediate lesson, we're going to look at double stops in the key of A. We did some work last year on double stops in G (see Jan '19 Free Lesson) and I now want to look at the key of A. For beginners we'll start with the basic melody to You Are My Sunshine. Then we'll look at some theory and eventually move on to a double stop version of the same song. The lesson worksheet can be downloaded here, and the corresponding video is here.

Advanced - Playing in 7/8 & Ruchenitsa

For the Advanced lesson, I want to have a look at how we play in the slightly odd time signature of 7/8. We'll discuss the different versions of 7/8, what our right hand should be doing and then use a Bulgarian Folk tune called 'Ruchenitsa' as an example piece. The lesson worksheet can be downloaded here and the corresponding video is here.

These lessons are completely free and I intend to try to keep them that way... but this is quite a time consuming exercise … if you are enjoying the lessons, please do consider making a donation to MandoMike via the link at the bottom of the homepage … or go and purchase my latest PDF workbook .

If you have any questions, or any problems with accessing the lessons or the videos, please just hit 'reply' on this email. For anyone new to the website, all previous Free Lessons are still available here :-)

See you next month! Hope you enjoy the lesson :) Mando Mike
