14) June '19: Harvest Home & Big Country

Updated: Feb 7

Hello fellow mandolin player! I hope this blog post For the Beginner & Intermediate lesson, I want to work through the standard session tune 'Harvest Home' also known as the 'Cork Hornpipe'. For beginners, this is a difficult tune to learn and I want to focus on the basic melody and also how to play a Hornpipe feel. For intermediate players, I want you to absolutely make sure your right hand is doing the correct thing … and then we'll add a nice fancy triplet run to the melody. finds you well, I am excited to be bringing you lesson #14 of the 'Free Monthly Lessons' published via www.mandomike.com. I'm very pleased with how the lessons have come out this month, and I hope you'll enjoy the two tunes I've chosen to look at; one is a favourite to teach beginners to move them towards intermediate standard … the other is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. Here's what I have in store for you all:

Beginner & Intermediate

For the Beginner & Intermediate lesson, I want to work through the standard session tune 'Harvest Home' also known as the 'Cork Hornpipe'. For beginners, this is a difficult tune to learn and I want to focus on the basic melody and also how to play a Hornpipe feel. For intermediate players, I want you to absolutely make sure your right hand is doing the correct thing … and then we'll add a nice fancy triplet run to the melody. The lesson pdf can be downloaded here and the corresponding video is here.

Advanced

For the Advanced lesson, I want to show you one of my all time favourite pieces of music; 'Big Country' by Bela Fleck. It's a fairly simple melody, but often played wrong by people as I'll explain in the video. We'll start in his original key of E, but then shift it down to D and see what we can do to the skeleton melody to make it more interesting . The lesson worksheet can be downloaded here and the corresponding video is here.

These lessons are completely free and I intend to try to keep them that way... but this is quite a time consuming exercise for me so if you are enjoying the lessons, please do consider making a donation to MandoMike via the link at the bottom of the homepage .... or go and purchase the new PDF workbook :-)

If you have any questions, or any problems with accessing the lessons or the videos, please just in touch via the contact page.

See you next month! Hope you enjoy the lesson :) Mando Mike
